Heal hearts and minds

Enhance lives with Farewell Photography

Boukje Canaan

My mission is:

to create an emotionally healthier world

Dear photography friend, in 2001 my twins were still born.I went home empty-handed form the hospital with only two polaroids that proved they had existed in my belly for 19 weeks.

In 2009, I lost my beloved mom. Amidst the grief, I knew one thing for certain – I needed photographs to remember her farewell. This was my way to hold onto precious memories that would comfort me and my family in the years to come.

Except the photographer did not capture everything the way I expected and wished for. It seemed too intimate for him.

Driven by these deeply personal experiences, I began offering farewell photography to other families. The concept was virtually non-existent at the time in the Netherlands. As I witnessed the profound impact these images had on others, it became clear to me that I had stumbled upon something truly invaluable. I felt compelled not only to capture these moments but also to teach, speak, write, exhibit, and elevate this form of photography into a respected and meaningful profession.

Through my journey, I’ve discovered the transformative power of photography in healing and honoring the ones we’ve lost. It’s more than just taking pictures – it’s about preserving legacies, telling stories, and providing solace to those in mourning. This is not just my profession; it’s my calling, born from a place of love and loss.

I love to inspire others on how pictures can heal hearts and minds.

“Extremely proud of completing 15 funerals my first year and generating a turnover of €27,000. Onward to reaching €50,000 in the next year!

Setting goals for myself was quite challenging. Boukje encouraged me to reward myself as well. Scary!

When I achieved my first goal, I felt euphoric. It was a victory. Boukje provided guidance that I initially hesitated to follow, but it consistently led to success experiences. After about 5 sessions, the transition from amateur to professional photographer was made 😘.”

Nicky Heinne

“As a wedding photographer, I work with a completely different audience. I have learned how to approach conversations with funeral directors differently. All of Boukje’s tips are so valuable; they provide you with direction and solutions that are simple to implement.”

Danny van Emmerik

“What I appreciated about our collaboration is that Boukje highlighted important aspects I hadn’t considered, including practical, business and mindset matters. I share her mission to create an emotional healthier world and this community is a great initiative to join forces worldwide.

Many are unaware of this type of photography, so it’s crucial to spread the word and share our experiences to grow as professionals.”
