I heard my husband talking about many towns in Afghanistan that are completely dark in the evening. Back at Bagram Airfield, it looked like Las Vegas—bright, glowing, alive. The contrast was striking. In those towns, the generators ran only a few hours during the day.
Electricity was not a given, not something you could rely on at any moment. And for a guy from America, from a Western society where light is always at our fingertips, this was a strange thing to witness.
It’s hard for me to imagine what that must have felt like. Because I, too, am used to simply flipping a switch and flooding a room with light. Something as small as a lightbulb changes everything. It transforms how we live, how we work, how we move through our day. A tiny invention, yet its impact is beyond measure.
The Smallest Changes Can Shift Our Perception
This got me thinking about how small things shape our world in ways we often overlook.
A pen can write history.
A camera can capture a fleeting moment that will be treasured forever.
